Offchain governance Process Improvement

Hi Indigo Community,

This is Logan from Clarity. We are excited to propose updates to the Indigo DAO’s offchain governance processes.

Over the last 3 years Clarity has worked on building Cardano Native Governance tooling. We believe the tooling we have built will significantly improve the Indigo DAO’s governance pipeline. This solution will replace the current Discourse-based governance with a more robust, Cardano-native, and flexible system.

Here is a write up of the proposal.

Proposal for Off-Chain Governance Solutions

Client: The Indigo DAO
Provider: Clarity Foundation
Proposal Date: December 1st, 2024
Monthly Cost: 2,000 ADA or 2,000 USD

Overview

Clarity proposes a comprehensive off-chain governance solution for The Indigo DAO. This solution will replace the current Discourse-based governance with a more robust, Cardano-native, and flexible system.

Key Features

  1. Secure Off-Chain Governance Hosting
  • Provide Indigo DAO with a platform for hosting governance actions, including:
    • Forum Discussions: A space for open dialogue and information sharing on a particular topic.
    • Temperature Check Polls: Engage members with preliminary opinion polls to gauge sentiment before formal votes.
  1. Customizable Voting Power Calculations
  • Flexible algorithms to dynamically calculate voting power based on predetermined criteria, allowing the DAO to customize voting influence within the community.
  1. INDY Token-Gated Membership
  • Restrict governance access to holders of the INDY token to:
    • Enhance security
    • Minimize spam and bot activity
    • Prevent vote manipulation through multiple account creation

Additional Custom Solutions

  • IPFS Integration (Q1 2025 Delivery)
    • Enable decentralized storage for official votes, preserving records immutably on IPFS to ensure transparency and accessibility.
  • Staked INDY as voting power (Upon Launch)
    • This will enable staked INDY to not have to be removed to count as voting power.
  • APIs for Custom Platform Integration (Q2 2025 Delivery)
    • Clarity will provide APIs, allowing The Indigo DAO to integrate governance tools directly into its existing platform, ensuring a seamless member experience.
  • White Label Solution
    • Clarity will offer a fully branded white-label solution tailored to The Indigo DAO’s specifications, maintaining the DAO’s unique branding and identity.

Tutorials and Onboarding

To help onboard the Indigo Community, Clarity will host workshops and office hours for the Indigo DAO to get up and running!

Cost

  • Monthly Subscription Fee: 2,000 ADA

Conclusion

This solution aims to bring Indigo DAO’s governance to a new level! Clarity is prepared to build a lasting partnership with The Indigo DAO, continuously adapting our solutions to meet evolving needs.

Please do not hesitate to ask questions. Our goal is to work with the Indigo Community to provide the governance tooling needed to grow and prosper.

I fully support this proposal and I think the asking price is more than fair. I have been fallowing what Clarity is building for some time now. The options this would give the Indigo DAO with regards to our off-chain governance processes would be and incredible upgrade. If anyone is not familiar with what Clarity is capable of I encourage you look them up. This would be an epic upgrade for us.

The proposed solution aligns well with our goals of fostering a more engaged and decentralized community. The ability to tailor voting power calculations and integrate with our existing platform is particularly appealing.

We would be keen to explore this partnership further. To make an informed decision, we would appreciate the following:

A more detailed breakdown of the monthly fee: Could you please provide a breakdown of the 2,000 ADA monthly fee, specifying how it is allocated to the various services and support provided?
A demo or prototype: It would be incredibly helpful to see a demonstration or prototype of the platform. This would give us a better understanding of its user interface, functionality, and customization options.
Success stories: Could you share examples of other DAOs that have successfully implemented Clarity’s governance solutions and the outcomes they achieved?

We are particularly interested in understanding how the platform will handle:

Onboarding new users: How will new members be introduced to the platform and its features?
Voting processes: What mechanisms are in place to ensure fair and transparent voting procedures?
Dispute resolution: How will disputes or disagreements within the community be handled?

I’m excited about this proposal! It’s something we have been looking forward for quite some time!

Here are a few questions I’d appreciate clarity on:

  1. Will there be an option to set the minimum amount of INDY to qualify as holders?
  2. How secure is the link between forum account personal information and wallet? What measures are in place to ensure private data remains protected and doesn’t risk exposure?
  3. Can users keep their connected wallets private, ensuring anonymity where needed?
  4. Can users mark their votes as private when participating in polls?
  5. Will it be possible for users to connect multiple wallets to a single forum account?
  6. Can the monthly cost be proposed in USD instead of ADA?
  7. Will there be features to send temp checks with co-authors? Or maybe sending a proposal using the group as the author? Eg working groups from indigo PWG, POG

Hey thanks for the questions, let me know if you have any further questions!

A more detailed breakdown of the monthly fee: Could you please provide a breakdown of the 2,000 ADA monthly fee, specifying how it is allocated to the various services and support provided?

Services provided:

  • A reliable custom, cardano native, white labeled offchain governance portal that includes
    • Membership Gating via INDY token
    • Dynamic voting power calculation that can be adjusted based on the DAOs needs
    • Multiple governance action types
      • Forums
      • Temp check polls
      • Crowdsource Polling

Support provided:

  • The Clarity team is keen to collaborate and take feedback from the Indigo DAO. We will be on standby to provide any support and tutorials or technical support.
  • Should the DAO want, we can host a bi monthly meeting or something to solicit feedback and show/explain new features

The monthly fee covers the expenses to ensure constant maintenance and reliability of the governance portal by paying developers to maintain and iterate on the infrastructure. This also covers the cost of hosting and technical stack infrastructure.

In addition to making sure Indigo has a reliable solution, the monthly fee will also contribute to continued development of the additional features we are building for the Indigo DAO. These include an IPFS integration, staked INDY as voting power, APIs for custom platform integration.

Currently 178 organizations have been created with Clarity. 1,124 unique voters have used the platform to cast votes.

You can see live metrics of the platform usage here: https://www.clarity.vote/daoDashboard

Here are some quick examples of organizations leveraging the infrastructure to carry out governance

  1. Flux Point Studios: This is a gaming studio that leverages decentralized governance. Together $SHARD holders decide on treasury spending and game developments.
  2. ATXGOV DAO: This is a DAO that was created to plan the Austin Cardano Constitutional workshop as a community. Together the community decided on the venue to book, the food to serve, and where the after party would be.
  3. Clarity DAO: We use the infrastructure for our own internal governance operations. We have used the feature sets to carry out many governance actions, treasury withdrawals, incentive programs and more!
  4. GoKey DAO: This is a group of real estate investors that co own and operate real estate together via a DAO structure. They have used Clarity to purchase and govern land in Colorado.
  5. Sundae DAO: Sundae uses the infrastructure to deposit protocol revenue into a DAO treasury each month.
  6. NIKE: This meme community uses the infrastructure to run community incentive programs and governance.

We are particularly interested in understanding how the platform will handle:

Onboarding new users: How will new members be introduced to the platform and its features?

If you have INDY, it will be as easy as clicking a button to join the DAO.We will host workshops for the Indigo DAO. We will also provide tutorials on how to onboard yourself.

Voting processes: What mechanisms are in place to ensure fair and transparent voting procedures?
Results are hidden during voting by default. After the poll closes results are made available. Votes can only be casted by wallets who meet the Indigo DAO membership thresholds.

Dispute resolution: How will disputes or disagreements within the community be handled? This is up to the Indy community. They could use Clarity for dispute resolution voting.

  1. Will there be an option to set the minimum amount of INDY to qualify as holders?

  2. Yes

  3. How secure is the link between forum account personal information and wallet? What measures are in place to ensure private data remains protected and doesn’t risk exposure?

  4. A Cardano wallet is the minimum requirement to use the Clarity App. To join the Indigo DAO, users will have to connect a wallet that meets the minimum INDY requirement to participate in governance. Users have the option to not share their email address if they don’t want to.

  5. Can users keep their connected wallets private, ensuring anonymity where needed?

  6. Yes

  7. Can users mark their votes as private when participating in polls?

  8. The way wallets vote in snapshot proposals remains private. By default, we post results and how each wallet voted after the vote closes. We can make an admin option to post or not post results if desired.

  9. Will it be possible for users to connect multiple wallets to a single forum account?

  10. Yes, as long as each wallet meets the minimum requirements to register as a member of the Indigo DAO.

  11. Can the monthly cost be proposed in USD instead of ADA?

  12. Yes we are open to this.
